The Road I

Welcome to the official online home of Alanna Bell—licensed therapist, inspirational speaker, and author of the poignant recovery memoir The Road I Never Meant to Take.

about the author

Alanna Bell

Alanna Bell has spent over two decades as a trauma-informed therapist, school counselor, and healing arts practitioner. But her most powerful credentials weren’t earned in classrooms—they were shaped in the quiet, painful spaces of her own recovery.

Like so many helpers, Alanna was trained to listen, hold, and guide others toward healing. What she wasn’t trained for was how to fall apart. Years into her career, she found herself facing the very thing she’d helped others navigate: addiction, shame, and the unraveling of a carefully held-together life.

the road i never meant to take

The Road I Never Meant to Take is a memoir like no other—a poignant and transformative collection of 52 letters that guide readers through the descent into addiction and the soul-lifting climb toward recovery. Each letter is its own chapter—a standalone reflection that can be read daily, weekly, or at the reader’s own pace.

At the heart of the book is L, a therapist in recovery writing to a friend who understands the darkness. Through her voice, the letters explore not just one woman’s story, but a collective experience—shaped by Alanna Bell’s personal recovery and the lives of many she’s walked alongside as a therapist and fellow traveler.

What makes this memoir truly distinct is its fusion of lived experience, clinical insight, scientific understanding, and spiritual depth. The letters weave together research-based truths about the biology of addiction, the neurochemistry of trauma, and the impact of chronic stress on the brain, alongside the emotional and spiritual realities of what it means to fall apart—and heal.

This book is a standout in recovery literature. Its story has been lived by many but has not been held up to the light, and shared. Alanna has done this with candor, bravery, kindness, and deep clinical understanding. The second-person address is intimate and heart-wrenching, and models the self-reflection and vulnerability required for healing. Alanna gives us all of it, with unflinching clarity and kindness.

The Road I Never Meant to Take is a profound bridge between the science of healing and the soul of recovery. As someone trained in neuroscience and deeply committed to mind-body wellness, I found Alanna's integration of trauma, addiction science, and spirituality to be both accurate and powerfully human. But beyond the science, this book made me feel. It reminded me why I do the work I do-and why so many healers are quietly suffering. Alanna's letters are not just for readers in recovery; they're for anyone who has ever lost themselves while trying to save others.
